Attorney Opportunities

GMSR is one of California’s premier appellate law practices. Our lawyers tackle cutting-edge legal issues on the profession’s biggest stages, including both the California and United States Supreme Courts. Associates are an integral part of our team. GMSR staffs cases leanly, most often with just two lawyers. This gives our associates big opportunities in every case. In fact, our associates draft appellate briefs and present oral arguments from the time they join the firm—often making an immediate impact on the law.

GMSR strives to develop its associates into partners, providing them one-on-one mentoring as they acquire a deep understanding of the appellate process. GMSR associates receive this mentoring and hands-on experience while working on diverse, intellectually stimulating cases in a supportive environment—and without the crushing workload and discovery battles that often typify practice at larger firms. Reflecting the success of this approach, most GMSR partners started at the firm as associates.

We support pro bono work, and we offer flexible work settings—at GMSR’s offices, at home, or a hybrid of the two.

We welcome applications from attorneys with a demonstrated interest in civil appellate practice and excellent analytical and writing skills. Successful candidates generally graduated near the top of their law school class; participated in law review or moot court; and have experience as litigators, appellate law clerks, or both.

To apply, send a cover letter, resume and two writing samples to careers@gmsr.com.

Appellate Fellowship Opportunities

GMSR’s Appellate Fellowship offers recent law school graduates an opportunity to explore an interest in appellate advocacy and begin to develop an appellate practice early in their careers.

Fellows join GMSR for a two-year term after law school. They are fully integrated into all aspects of the firm’s work. Under the close supervision and mentorship of GMSR attorneys, fellows will perform legal research, draft legal arguments, assist attorneys in preparing for oral argument, co-author articles, and cite-check briefs and motions. GMSR hopes that fellows will go on to judicial clerkships after the fellowship.

Fellows receive a salary and benefits, including health insurance. They are based in GMSR’s Los Angeles office.

To apply, please send a cover email, resume, transcript, and writing sample to careers@gmsr.com. GMSR began accepting applications in July of 2022 for a 2-year term that will begin in the Fall of 2023.

Commitment to Diversity

GMSR is committed to diversity and equal opportunity. The firm has adopted the Los Angeles County Bar Association’s Pledge to Promote Diversity in the Legal Profession, and has joined the Los Angeles County Bar Association/Women Lawyers’ Association of Los Angeles Call to Action regarding the attraction, retention, and advancement of women lawyers. Several of our attorneys have also served as mentors for The Appellate Project, whose mission is to empower students of color to thrive in the appellate field. In line with those commitments, we welcome job applicants from all backgrounds regardless of race, color, religion, gender, gender expression, age, national origin, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status.
