Nancy M. Olson

Nancy Olson has a wide array of appellate experience in civil and criminal appeals in both state and federal court. Before joining GMSR, Nancy served as an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA), briefing and arguing dozens of matters involving complex criminal and constitutional law questions before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. As an appellate AUSA, Nancy also took a prominent role partnering with trial attorneys at the United States Attorney’s Office to provide substantive advice and to help preserve issues for appeal. The trial attorneys trusted Nancy in this role because she too had served as a trial AUSA, handling federal criminal matters from inception of the investigation through charging, plea or trial, and sentencing. Before becoming an AUSA, Nancy honed her trial and appellate skills as a litigation associate with multinational law firms.  In this role, she worked on matters in a variety of substantive areas, including intellectual property, commercial litigation, white collar criminal defense, and business torts, among others. Her private-practice appellate work included matters before the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Ninth and Federal Circuits, the California Court of Appeal, and the California Supreme Court. Nancy also handled numerous pro bono immigration matters on appeal.

In addition to her practice experience, Nancy offers an insider’s perspective on how courts consider and decide the cases before them, having served as a law clerk to the Hon. N. Randy Smith of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the Hon. Alicemarie H. Stotler of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. As a law clerk, Nancy drafted opinions and orders involving matters touching nearly every substantive area of the law, including class actions and multidistrict litigation, consumer finance, real estate, insurance, intellectual property, civil rights, fraud, unfair competition, employment, and myriad criminal matters.

Before law school, Nancy worked as a financial analyst in the real estate services and entertainment industries, first consolidating the corporate procurement function at First American Financial Corporation and next creating marketing budgets for new album releases at Capitol Records. This business experience contributes to Nancy’s ability to analyze complex financial and damages questions on appeal.
